Flash memory prices today are somewhat lower than they were in
February, when I posted my last note on the subject.
For Compactflash, prices are as follows:
1GB: $15 to $20
2GB: $20 to $25
4GB: $35 to $40
8GB: $70 to $90
These prices are for perfectly serviceable flash cards from
less-well-known companies such as A-Data, Transcend, RiData and PNY.
Expect to pay more for heavily advertised brands like Sandisk and Lexar.
The new 16GB cards offer the best value per GB of storage:
16GB: $115 to $130
Prices for Secure Digital cards are a few dollars lower than
Compactflash of a similar capacity.
Vendors sometimes put two cards in a package and sell it as double the
capacity. Check to make sure your 4GB purchase is not composed of two
2GB flash cards.
One reliable site to check prices is http://www.dealram.com
Watch for locally-advertised specials, too. Today, flash memory is
sold in drug stores and discount stores, not only in computer and
camera specialty stores.
