Hi All,
after carting around my diy preamp and MZ RH-1 plus batteries and
cables etc. on my last trip I'm seriously thinking about moving to a
solid state recorder with decent balanced preamps. I've been reading
the archives and have narrowed the selection down to FR2-LE and
possibly a Tascam HD-P2. The budget will stretch to a Oade "super
mod" FR2-LE, an unmodified HD-P2 and at a very big stretch a "super
mod" HD-P2.
I was wondering if anyone had experience with the Oade modified
recorders and could comment on their value? I've listened the samples
of the Oade marantz mods and the preamps seem to be significantly
quieter than stock, but I'm curious how the mods sound in the real
world?
I note that there was some discussion of the stock HD-P2 preamp gain
being quite low, so I'm wondering if the AT3032's (specs claim

I was also trying to listen to the HD-P2 24bit samples at http://
www.avisoft.com/recordertests.htm and they seem to be horribly
distorted. Is this a file or recorder problem??
cheers
Paul
