Not sure of the situation in the US but here in Australia, the
serious off-road vehicles bring with them a subculture - hopefully
minority - that manifests as pure environmental vandalism. A number
of remnants of indigenous plant communities close to Melbourne have
been closed to all vehicle traffic due to the damage inflicted by
4x4's and trail bikes turning every incline into a rutted wasteland.
I visited one such area on the weekend and while the vandals had been
effectively locked out of the public reserve, they had moved across
the road and had pretty much destroyed the hillside leading from
creek to road. The sad thing is the people doing these things are
proud of their exploits as evidenced by youtube videos:

While we were at the reserve adjoining this location there was a
fantastic variety of birds calling, but the continual wail of trail
bikes and a couple of 4x4's doing circuits made any attempt at
recording quite futile.
