i will give a plug for "Auntie beeb" here, the BBC have been getting
it right for decades, they have the biggest sound vault in the world
including the British library and cornell combined. I have spent
literally years recording ambient sounds for the BBC and am very
proud to be a part of her. some of the best documentaries come from
BBC Bristol and end up on the discovery and animal planet channels
including many film scores, i spend 6 months of the year updating the
ambient sounds of our ever changing planet just so we can keep it
authentic.
I agree with Bernie though, it is mostly laziness on behalf of the
film makers, i have seen it first hand, "put that in, they will never
know" i heard a boreal chickadee in a recent film (can't remember the
title) but it was set down in the southwest, it totally threw me!
Some filmmakers do not see the value in real sound and cheapen it, i
have been in negotiations over 60 bloody dollars for an animal sound
on a 30 million budget!
