Since size and weight are issues, I'd suggest you
consider the new Fostex FR-2LE and Tascam HD-P2.

The FR-2LE has preamps that seem the equal
of those in the FR-2, and the FR-2LE has a very
clever solution (an RC car battery) for
long hours of recording without battery concerns.
For $600 it's a great recorder.

The $1000 HD-P2 has features similar to the $1300 FR-2,
(e.g., top digitizing rate of 24/192, timecode input,
digital audio input and output), but in a smaller and
lighter package.

All three of these recorders have low self-noise, which
is useful when you turn up the gain of the preamp to maximum
when capturing a quiet vocalization. The Telinga parabola
helps in this regard, too.

Here's a quick comparison of the dimensions of
these three recorders.

Fostex FR-2LE
57 x 206 x 132 mm
1550 cc
907 g
= recorder (800 g) + 4 AA (92 g) + CF card (15g)

Tascam HD-P2
65 x 196 x 260 mm
3312 cc
1400 g
= recorder (1200 g) + 8 AA cells (184 g) + CF card (15g)

Fostex FR-2
77 x 220 x 250 mm
4235 cc
1600 g
= recorder (1500 g) + 8 AA cells (184 g) + CF card (15g)
