That generator was truly heartbreaking. The 5 or so minutes I did
manage to record had me cursing (quietly) afterward. I would have
recorded much longer stretches, but I couldn't stand the sound in the
background. Instead my friend and I just sat there and listened as we
walked around.
I have a hunch that since it has been so dry in that area, the places
that do retain pools of water are probably quite crowded, as this one
was. Then again, maybe multi-species choruses are commonplace in the
South (Walt?) and I have just never paid attention before. For those
of you in the Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi area, I would urge you to
seek out these places, even if you have no intention of recording - it
was far more beautiful than a microphone could capture.
Thanks all for the positive identification on the nightjar. I was
unaware that there was a bird called the Chuck-will's-widow - my
friend will be happy to know exactly what it is.
