compares to a blimp in high winds?"
Blimps have terrible stability problems in high winds, they usually
remain grounded at the airport. Very unsafe...
But seriously, I reviewed the DPA Windpac for a local audio magazine
some time ago, comparing it to my Rycote. I didn't have a wind tunnel,
so I stuck the two of them through the sunroof of a sporty little
sedan and hit the highway at speeds of up to 60km/h. I used a matched
pair of DPA 4023 miniature cardioids, one in each windshield, matching
their gains as closely as possible and feeding both into a Nagra V.
Firstly, the DPA outperformed the Rycote (with fuzzy) in general,
blocking up to 6dB more wind noise, but their filtering bandwidths
differed significantly, giving each a different tonality.
Secondly, in non-wind situations, the Windpac passed more useful
energy in the extended high frequency areas than the Rycote (without
fuzzy), making it the higher fidelity option.
I have not tried the rain coat.
