Compact field recorder HiMD or Flash media question

I haven't been following latest and greatest tech issues on the list 
but have a question for a teacher colleague and friend in Canada:

Any recommendations on small, compact, inexpensive HiMD, flash 
recorders or other new tech ($2-300) that have easily calibrated 
inputs?
