You are absolutely correct about this. All of the quality factors you
are interested in are dependent upon monitoring. Good, reference
quality monitoring is crucial for judging performance differences
with a better chance that others will also be able to appreciate
them. I'd suggest this order of priorities:
(1) Headphones (plugged directly into your computer speaker output
jack) (~$75+)

(2) Ad an audio interface that with better digital sound processing
circuitry than your computer. (~$200 +)
I'd focus on suggestions from folks who have used the same
editing/mixing software and platform and OS you use for years. Do
this research on the users forum for that software-- such as

(3) Add a reference quality stereo amp ($200+) and reference quality
monitor speakers. (~$200/pair +). For suggestions about the last two
items, check with folks who produce programming like you want to
produce.
