Regarding archival life of digital media, HHB says its high-quality minidiscs (the 74 and 80 minute discs used by standard minidisc recorders) are safe for 50 years. Here's the link http://www.hhb.co.uk/hhb/uk/store/Catalogue.asp?Show=3DMINIDISC&ShowDesc=3D= MINIDISC&Page=3D1 I wonder if this 50 year estimate changes when one formats an HHB disc for use in a Hi-MD recorder? Flash memory has a storage life of about 10 years, according to the manufacturers. Sandisk's new One-Time Programmable flash memory is estimated to have a 100 year lifespan before starting to decay. If Sandisk can deliver OTP products at an affordable price (say, $1 for 1GB), I think this would be the most durable medium for long-term storage. --oryoki |
