Anyone who is interested in these range maps can now find a quick fix by either using "Mapmaker" http://www.mapmaker.com/ or Diva-GIS http://www.diva-gis.org/ I found a bunch of .shp files here too http://www.census.gov/geo/www/cob/co2000.html All the states are here with counties and a large map of the Americas with counties. Looks like this will help my problems for now. Many thanks for all the help and advice both on and off line..
