hello all,

at one point in time I wanted to make custom maps of Peru, showing
heights (raster) as well as rivers cities etc. I ended up using
DIVA-GIS. It has a clear manual, and some useful data ("shapefiles") on
the site ready to download: http://www.diva-gis.org/
recommended.
