Hi Mark--
I'd lean this way too-- with head-like spacing and boundaries.
Leonard's rig could be set-up on a styrofoam head

It seems like much of the appeal of Ambisonics is in the magic of the
mathematical processing-- being able to generate all the angles with
sums and differences. There are usually some less than perfectly
rendered portions of the stereo field when I work with omni's or
figure 8's in the open air, but it would still be fun to experiment
with the freeware and concepts on the cheap. Both Leonard and Len
are asking a lot of money for four electret quality mics-- a possible
mismatch with ambience in nature/quiet locations Rob D.
