Rip,
I do have some hearing loss and using some amplification does help me hear =
sounds that I would otherwise miss. I can hear high frequencies better if=
they are amplified. I use ear bud style headphones with a custom mold to=
fit my ear canals. The fit of the mold is comfortable for extended period=
s of use. I wore the original plugs using the three flange design but my e=
ars have turns in the canal that causes pressure points with the standard f=
it. The ear bud design has a stiff core and soft flanges for the seal, the=
y do not bend. Try some plastic earplugs with flanges for several hours an=
d see how you get along. If you can wear the device in your ears you are h=
alf way there, the other problem is that the added volume on the frequencie=
s that I hear normally causes stress and becomes uncomfortable after time. =
I can use the ear buds for a long time but when I remove the headphones, I=
feel a relief. It is like removing yourself from a noisy environment.

ocals reveal? monitor my dsm's w/earbuds, yes?

SNIP

can i ask a tech question if anyone might be willing to advise?

when i canoe thru rivers with my headworn DSM mics, should i monitor the re=
cording with shure e500 earbuds so i can hear the environs at mach amplific=
ation? hear farther? worth it? trouble with this idea?

the shures are expensive but somehow i think it would be worth it if i coul=
d hear the bird a long ways away and heads toward it. would it be worth it,=
would it help or should i just listen with my ears and steer towards sound=
s i hear? since with the sonic studios pre-amp and the edirol r-9 should be=
very clear up to 1/2 mile away or farther, would it help to monitor and wi=
ll my ears wear out listening at that volume for hours? i lean towards gett=
ing the earbuds.

happy i'm leaving dc.
