Sound Devices does a great job of shock-mounting the 722's internal
hard disc. So it's unlikely that the hard disc will be damaged by
typical field use. However, Sound Devices recommends using
Compactflash if you expect "severe service conditions."
Compactflash (CF) storage is more durable and reliable than a hard
disc (HD) under several circumstances:
-- CF has greater resistance to shock
Most HDs are rated to survive a a momentary shock of 250 to 300 times
the force of gravity. That's like falling 3 feet onto a concrete
floor. CFs are rated to survive 2000 Gs, produced by falling about 10
feet.
-- CF has a greater tolerance for vibration when not in operation.
HDs are rated to tolerate 3 to 5 Gs of vibration. CF tolerates 15 Gs.
(Think how you felt the last time you rode for hours in the back of a
jeep.)
-- CF operates in lower temperatures
Most HDs are rated for operation down to 5C / 41 F. Many (but not
all) CFs are rated to -15C / 5F.
-- CF operates in higher temperatures
HD is OK to operate in temperatures up to 55C / 130F. CF is rated to
65 C / 150F or more. (It gets hot very quickly in an enclosed space
that is exposed to the sun.)
-- CF has greater resistance to high humidity.
HDs are generally rated for operation up to 85% humidity, CF to 95%.
-- CF has no vulnerability to low air pressure
Most HDs have a recommended maximum elevation of 3000 meters / 9850
feet. CF typically have no elevation limit.
-- CF uses a little less battery power than HD
The 702 records longer than the 722 on the same size battery.
Today, it doesn't cost much of a premium to have the advantages of
Compactflash. An 8GB Compactflash card costs about $140. The Sound
Devices 722 ships with a 40GB hard disc, so you'd need 5 Compactflash
cards to provide an equivalent amount of storage. That would cost
($140 * 5) =3D $700.
The Sound Devices 702 (CF only) costs $525 less than 722 (40GB HD plus
CF). So if you prefer the 702, you would pay a premium of about ($700
- $525) =3D $175 for a Compactflash-only solution.
Each 8GB card has the capacity to hold a bit more than 8 hours of
stereo 24/48 WAV files per card. Recording at 16/44.1 (CD quality),
an 8GB CF card holds 13 hours of WAV files.

ps. With the newly announced V2.0 firmware, you can use an external
hard disc with the 702 if you need more than 8GB capacity.
