Hi Igor--
One can make bigger mistakes. One can imagine using an external mic
preamp with the line analog or digital input, but the cost of a
low-noise high-gain external mic pre with phantom power will probably
be considerably more than a new RH-1 Hi-MD deck. Add ~$70 USD for
the external phantom power unit in your cost comparisons if you have
condenser mics. Also check the quality of the line inputs first
before buying any pre.

Hindsight is perfect, but if one find's something potentially
exciting, one can quickly run the model number through list archives
and discussion forums. A list of short-cuts to applicable list
archives and forums would be another nice resource to see on our
yahoo group site gate. Rob D
