a few weeks ago, Julian suggested Pearl mid-side mics,
so I looked into them a bit. they seem hard to find in US,
and are made in Sweden.
the MSH-10 is a Mid-side mic with 16db noise rating, although the
cost - as for most of the Pearl mics - is nearly $2000 US.
here is a response I got from Pearl with regard to their stated
ability to handle humidity, dust, and temperature extremes.
"The MSH 10 is [like] all our MS mics, very resistant against bad
humidity. I guess one of the best in the market. Our MS-mics have
been used outdoor by many without problem but I don't know how it is
in Costa Rica but I guess the humidity is high. Regarding snow our
MS =96mic MS 8CL is used very often in the north region of Sweden by
Swedish Radio. The same kind of mic was used 10 years ago when a
Swedish expedition climb to the top of Mount Everest for the
expedition documentary film. And the results were very good for the
film sound and for the expedition who reach the top.
The side mic has one dB higher noise than the Mid."
this last bit of info is especially interesting, given that
the side Mic noise is a problem for many Mid-side offerings,
most notably the Sennheiser MKH 418.
please note, Pearl only claim their four "mid-side" mics as
being highly resistant to humidity, dust and temperature extremes,
NOT the ELM-B figure 8 I posted about recently,
and about which Walt reminded of the possible
lack of field worthiness.
anf finally, my question - does anyone have experience
importing mics from other countries, paying import
duties, etc?
this MSH-10 mic appears to be available in Amsterdam
for $1170 US, although it's possibly a typo, as all the other Pearl
mics are much nearer the $2000 US mark.
my reading on the US import duties is 4.9% for recording
equipment such as this.
if true, the price with shipping might be around $1250.
this sure seems to be a strong contender in the category of
high quality Mid-Side single point mics.
thoughts?
thanks in advance,
clay
