The simplest thing to do is to wire the hot to both the tip and the
ring, so it records on both channels. Then you'll hear it on both
ears of the phones, and hear it from both speakers in playback.

A more sophisticated scheme would be to build a 10 or 15 dB pad in
the connector for one channel so if one overloads the other will
still be in-range.
