Marty, I recall reading accounts of people actually in desperate circumstances repacking the optical disk of an MD in a new case-housing (!?) to get data off it, so I don't think the recordings are lost. I'd first try completely removing that metal piece and seeing if any decks you have will load/read the disk with it missing; some might.
