Hi Martyn and the Group

I live in NE Essex between Colchester and Clacton-on-Sea, quite close
to Brightlingsea; about 55 miles East of the centre of London as the
crow flies

The area is close to tidal estuaries and salt marshes but has some
ribbon housing development. I suppose it has a normal suburban/rural
noise level other than the almost constant rumble of aircraft starting
their descent into the London airports. An early arrival can be heard
passing E to W in the second clip in my "In The Wet" post.

Now that I am getting to grips with the MZ-NH1 and NT4 I intend
investigating the recording opportunities on the saltmarsh. Some views
of the possible recording area are shown in the "Saltmarsh Recording
Area" album at

m("btinternet.com/my_photos","//uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/g0sbw");">http:

The distance from the foreground to the open sea (North Sea entrance
to the Thames Estuary) is one and a half miles so there is quite a bit
of ground to cover. The nature of the marsh makes close in recording
problematical, if not dangerous. For the time being I think I will
have to be content using the NT4 for soundcapes.

I have a regular five mile walk down one side of the Marsh. Taking
along the NT4 on the walk has not proven ideal. It is quite bulky and
heavy and I am either too far away or pointing the mic in the wrong
direction when the interesting things happen.

I have two MZ-NH1s (got them at a very low price during the recent
"Argos" stock clearance sale) so hope to experiment with home made
parabola/shotgun mics coupled to one and "Dan Dugan" style shoulder
mounted omnis connected to the other.

The elements will be the very low cost capsules shown in the "DIY
Mics" album at the above site.

I will report on the experiment in due course.

Cheers

Tom Robinson
