Hi Kyle-- I agree thoroughly that one can't go
wrong investing in good mics because they lose
very little value while affording great returns.
And congratulations on choosing the mics first!
The Portadisc's mic pre does spec nicely among
the current crop of recorders costing less than a
SD722 and possibly the Fostex FR-2. We've been
batting new recorder pros and cons around for
months and its exhausting work. In terms of
quality that really counts (very low mic pre
noise and high gain), the <$1000 recorders don't
have much "leg up" on a $250 HiMD with a $70
Rolls portable phantom supply except they're more
self-contained and some have better buttons. Jay
Rose has been noting in recent reviews of the
Edirol R-4 and other flash recorders that the
reduced mic pre gain and marginal noise
performance negate the advantages of 24 bit
recording. There's also the new $300 HiMD "does
it all" Sony MZ-RH1 that might be out in a
month. If Klas feels the Telinga Stereo is a
good match for PIP/HiMD, I bet that package would
sound great. Enjoy your Telinga!. Rob D.
