I think the noise is from electromagnetic interference from the
recorder through its plastic back panel.  I had the rh-10 on top of
the pb-224 with the adapter cable sandwiched between the two. The
problem somewhat improved when I removed the rh10 from on top of the
pb-224, and the problem disappeared when I repositioned the adaptor
cable so it was not against the back of the recorder.  My adapter was
made from a Radio Shack cable, which I will soon be replacing with
something with better shielding.
