I haven't seen this 16Khz spike on my mkh40/30 combo. I'm pretty sure
this is not typical. It is odd that its happening to both of you
though,..

If I was sure the sound wasn't environmental and I could produce it
with two different recorders (one, a "pro" standard might help your
cause) and two sets of mic cables, I'd pick a slow week and send the
recordings and sonograms on CD with both mics to Sennheiser. Their
repair prices here in the US, at least, are very reasonable,
especially if a component has failed. They'll test the frequency
response of both mics and send you the charts.

Richard, if the left channel of your firecrest recording is the
mkh-30-- the louder of the two channels-- this seems inconsistent
with my pair where the 40 usually produces more saturation due to the
extended low end response compared to the 30. Rob D.
