Romily,
Could you please let us know what the cause of the problem was with your
Edirol R4 / MKH 20 setup? It would be very useful to the rest of us to be
able avoid such odd problems in the future. Without being familiar with the
R4 it is difficult to imagine what incorrect setting of the R4 could be
responsible for the mics sounding to be incorrectly placed.
Incidentally, I think your original idea of using MKH 40s for your (singing)
recording was probably the correct one rather than MKH 20s which do not seem
to me to be the appropriate mic for the job. You might also try a test with
the Rode NT4 as this might solve your problem for rather less money than the
MKHs.

Rob Danielson (offline) homed in on the suspicious fact that the mics
sounded equally bad and so identified something about the Edirol R4
(or cables, but not the mics) as the root of the problem.
