Rob Danielson (offline) homed in on the suspicious fact that the mics
sounded equally bad and so identified something about the Edirol R4
(or cables, but not the mics) as the root of the problem.

He appears to be dead right! I've just done some quick tests with the
mics hitched up to a Portadisc and they work fine. I had done a quick
test with them plugged into the Portadisc before going off to the
recording session, and they seemed ok. However I like to stick with
what we've used previously, so used the Portadisc for the main mics
(TLM 103s) at the session, hitching the MKHs to the R4. I knew from
monitoring that something was seriously wrong but could not
investigate as the priority at a session is to make sure the main
recording is ok!

So, thanks to all who tried to help - Bernie, Klas, Eric, Mike. And
Rob, you're a genius.

Sorry for previous blank posting. I punched the return key too many
times in the Subject line, thinking my cursor was in the message box,
and off it went!
