HiMD v C Flash

I have until recently been using an original MDRZ30 with piggyback AA
battery pack for field recordings especially Guillemots, Razorbills,
Puffins & Manx Shearwaters. I use a variety of mics depending on
proximity of subject with 3.5mm jack converters where necessary. The
mic input-gain is ganged to both channels so stereo balance is
subject to mic placement or dubbed adjusted copies.
My recorder was recently stolen, luckily not the mics or any discs so
I am looking around for a replacement. HiMD seems a valid alternative
but is a `bastard format' to my archive and other mains powered MD
equipment. I thought I would chance a move into solid state recorders
and wonder what advice I could get regarding the relative merits of
the M-Audio Microtrack 24/96 versus the Edirol R1. Both seem to have
a multitude of facilities, but are the built-in effects really useful
on the R1 and do they out-weigh the separate L/R gain controls &
balanced TRS =BC" inputs of the M-Audio etc? How well do the Compact
Flash cards cope with 24bit audio? I only have experience of them in
my camera where they stand up well to cool damp salt air around the
UK coast & islands. How robust are they, how long does the
rechargeable lithium-ion battery last and can they take AA's as an
alternative? I do not always have access to mains re-charging. Both
cost about the same in the UK so any user experience of either system
would be most helpful.
