Since you mentioned that "temps dipping to single digits" that I assume tha=
t your C: drive might not have enough free space. Since most application wi=
ll need temp space and not every application will warn you when don't have =
enough space for temp or virtual memory to continue to grow.

Of course, some of your described symptoms can be explained with 'memory =
problem' if the behavior are not always consistent.(Think about if there ar=
e 1 bits error and it 'happened to' locates in an important field - license=
, data configuration- mono vs. stereo,..)

If the problems usually associated with the data stored in the external har=
d disk, I will try to validate whether the external hard disk is close to t=
he end of the life(or just connection is somewhat loose)
=20=20
I can give you lot more hypothesis(which mostly are from my previous actu=
al experiences on my machines) for what might goes wrong for each of your o=
bserved behavior. But it will take too long to describe and lots of effort =
to validate/invalidate.
If you need more hypothesis/speculation, just let me know. I can also adv=
ice on how to validate/invalidate each of the hypothesis.

(Do you know that some software will try to convert the sampling rate for=
you, for example, 48k digital audio to 44.1k cd audio, but some other soft=
ware will just save the incoming 48k audio byte by byte that by playing tim=
e, it plays with 44.1k speed.
This happened to me when I have a soundcard support digital/analog input =
on the same jack which connect to Sony MD and I use audacity to record - au=

Hello all,
I just got back last week from Yucatan Mexico where I spent a week birding=
and recording. I recorded about 10 hour worth at various places.
Some I recorded on HI-MD and others on MD. When I got back, I transferred
HI-MD via USB using sonic stage and MD via analog (line in the computer),
which I have done in the past several years using either cool edit 2000 or=
Raven. Mostly I transfer in Cool Edit and have used Raven for analyses and=
cleaning up and I had had no problems. I store my files on an external hard=
drive.
But recently something weird is happening in Cool Edit.
1) When I tried to open some of the HI-MD files I get a big additional
noise which is not there in the original sounds.
2) Analogs transfer files which I had done as mono from MD as they were
mono (just two days ago and they were fine the day I transferred), when I
reopen the files they get spilt into two channels left and right and sound=
is distorted. I checked my setting and re-checked all seemed to be not
different. I tried to open them as mono but still it does not work.
3) Some files are no more readable by Raven though they are .wav files and=
the same is true for CE when I open them I Cool Edit they are distorted.
Other than that sometimes when I open Cool Edit software I get a message
that I have a trial software, but then continues on and one the top of the=
menu bar it does say that this software is licensed to me. So now I am
not sure what is happening.
These are questions for Cool Edit experts
Has my Cool Edit software got corrupted and that is why I am having all the=
trouble? Or something else is wrong? Since yesterday I am getting highly
frustrated as I cant do any editing (as temps dipping to single digits and=
not much to do outside, so good time to edit) and renaming of the files as=
I wanted to put them on a CD to give it to Mexican bird song experts to
confirm identification of birds I recorded and to get identification of
birds that I could not identify by song.
Any help will be appreciated!
Thanks in advance.
