Raimund has both 722 and a HD-P2 and reported at the end of the year
that with monitoring comparisons he felt the pre noise was very
comparable with maybe 6dB less gain from the HD-P2. Its unlikely
anyone around here or the university will be getting one I can test.
There's not a lot of discussion in the recording gear sections in
tapers section forum http://taperssection.com about the HD-P2's pre
performance. One post caught my eye that I didn't have time to pursue
adequately, " From what I gathered from Doug is that the Tascam's
specs on paper in regards to noise floor were not impressive at all,
possibly needing a little more work than the 671." Oade is not
providing useful specs for the HD-P2's pre performance under the
product info; their critique might be in their discussion forum. I'm
not questioning Raimund's report, just looking for some
confirmations. Seems like quite a few recordists are still waiting
and hoping a manuf can put a high quality 24 bit digital recorder
together for less than $1000. If I recall correctly, the Fostex F-2
has been confirmed to have high quality front end performance for a
couple of hundred more. Rob D.

Here's a HD-P2 manual:
