I found that leather is very efficient material for absorbing the Hi
frequency writing sound and I get none of the HiMD noise on my
recordings in very quiet places placing it in a small leather pouch
or camera bag. Its a battery saving feature I understand. My Sharp
MD recorders make writing sounds too.
Perhaps my record level setting practice is unusual in that I set it
by experience not unlike a photographer bracketing exposure for a
given lighting situation. The dynamic range created by the species
expected in a natural setting are reasonably predictable. In most
cases I go with a setting close to -12 dB for the background
ambience. Spatial depth is important to me and I don't mind
over-modulating jets and the occasional finch that decides the branch
next to the mic is a great perch. Other recordists go with something
closer to -20 to 25dB for the background ambience to ensure that all
calls are preserved with some loss of spatial resolution. Rob D.
