While my name isn't Rob and I don't have a 744, I do have a 722 and
have used a mix-pre on occasion. I think the 722 is incredible but am
planning on upgrading to a 744 once I have the money to get both that
and a sound devices 302. The mixpre is a fine little unit and one
that I would have no problems using for two extra channels of pres.

If the mixpre will be firmly glued to the 744, I would think the lack
of resolution in the metering, the fact that the outputs are fixed
line level, and the simple monitoring path would be of little
consequence. Sounds like a good match to me.

I'm leaning towards the 302, even though it's twice as much as the
mixpre new. It has much better metering, monitoring, and output
options than the mixpre. While paired with a 744 this might not be
that important, for stand alone use, the 302 seems much more capable,
and I will be in some situations where stand alone use is desirable.
While using the mixpre, I seem to remember the meter LED's going from
-15 to 0. It would have been nice to have another LED in the middle
(-7 maybe?).
