I noticed this device that can record wav (16/44 pcm) files directly to a usb storage device. http://www.ikey-audio.com/ikey.htm One would need an external mic preamp, but considering the problems with noise and inadequate gain with some of the lower cost CF recorders, perhaps this an option worth considering. The price is ok, looks like they can be had for around $125. I have no idea what one could expect for sound quality though.
