To put the "flaws" of the MT2496 for ambient nature recording into
perspective, when comparing resultant sound file saturations, the
_maximum_ gain a MicroTrack 2496 recorder is capable of (with +27dB
and everything to max) is at least 20dB lower than that those of HiMD
recorders and many MD recorders. If one were to try to use a low
sensitivity mic like a MS907 or MS957 in its compatible 1/8" mini
jack (which has even less gain) in quiet settings, the files created
would be very, very low in volume. Its headphone monitor volume is
also low to start with. I suspect the low mic preamp gain would
present more drawbacks for nature recordists than its higher pre
noise.
The MT is a thrill to hold and has many smart design features but it
seems to be suited best for concert taping. Rob D.
