I run a pair of NT1As through the standard mic pres, and I'm
very satisfied with the results. Yes, they could be quieter, but
the real question is whether the noise level interferes with my
low-level recordings, and so far it doesn't. I'll be running
some calibrated test recordings one of these days, but I would
say it's significantly quieter than my Edirol R-1.
Spot-checking a recent recording from my living room, with
icebox not far away and very faint street w/no traffic, I find a
clearly audible icebox in the noise floor, which is about -60
dbFS. That's a pair of NT1As straight into the XLRs with volume
at 1.5. I was doing some ADR, and the talent was about 2' from
the mics, and was peaking at about -8 dbFS.

Subject: [Nature Recordists] Mic Pre amps on 670?
Are they bad / noisy or just not as good as they shouldbe??
I see that the Oade brothers have a modification but I am
considering
buying a 670 and giving back my Microtrak for credit (about same
cost
with some extras coming with the 670)
In most cases I will be receiving a line signal from a Shure
mixer
that is not of the highest specs and feeding a digital camera so
mostly pre-amps are not an issue
Apparently the Oade mod doesnot mod the line in so I can assume
they
could not improve on them.
I could make the mod .. I don't want to send the 670 across the
border and then pay taxes on the mods from Oade
Thx
