Tim made some good suggestions. Raven is a high end (i.e., expensive)
program but it could be what you need. Like Audacity, you can download
it for free, but unlike Audacity all you get is a trial program that is
partially crippled until you pay for it. But (depending on your needs)
Audacity might do the job for free.
When testing your stereo recording, the most important thing is to be
sure you hear yourself in the right location. That is, be sure the
stereo imaging is correct. It's very easy to get the figure 8 mic
rotated wrong so that the stereo image is reversed or even worse.
But it's also important that the sound is properly balanced. As Tim
mentioned, the gain range could be an issue. You might also want to run
the Balance Calibration menu item (#75). This helps make sure that the
12 o'clock position on the bottom knob really sets the proper balance
between the channels. If it is not balanced properly, you could get
uneven results.
You might want to consider whether this group might want to hear some
of your recordings. Even though they will be primarily for scientific
research, portions may still have broader appeal. Who knows? Some of us
might even be interested in your research! What are you up to, anyway?
