With the Sound Devices units, firmware upgrading is extremely easy. Can be done directly from a computer that downloads it via firewire. I look forward to the enhanced functionality, and feel much better than being stuck with what was available at the time of purchase. Thus I see this as added value - the inadequate MP3 encoding is the only actual "defect" in the 7xx series I have encountered so far.
