Quite a few use 60's and 70's for the mid mic.
Useful for isolating a specific source--
especially it has higher, relative frequencies.
The signal from the mid mic doesn't have to be
dead center; you can place the signal anywhere in
the stereo field by adjusting the M-S matrix in
post. The 179 has at least 5dBA greater self
noise, probably more like 8, but its also about
$1000 less!  Rob D.
