I was lucky, then, it only cost us a small handful of trail snacks - I
don't remember the composition of the snacks used to entice the
(EnjoyBirds) vocalizations in the White Mountains, October 5th - my
impression at the time was the calling, a soft chattering, was more for the=
"benefit" of the other Gray Jay present (a pair), rather than any alarm.
The pair certainly had it down to a system. Their cache must have been huge=
- EVERY passing hiker was welcomed with close-approach . . . and that soft=
gray "fur" . . . "Oh look, the poor things, they must be STARVING!" [this
last an actual quote taken off the DAT I was making, from their NEXT
victims. The pair alternated the entertainment act and taking the loot to
various caches. I have always wondered since about circuses everywhere, if=
clowns train to entertain or if they train us to appreciate it. . . . maybe=
both.
