This is great! I wonder how it works for recording birds. 

I have 2 of those little clip-on mics you mention, I set them up for
stereo and got a whole summer's worth of great insect recordings
(http://www.geocities.com/shadow42.geo/insect-summer.html) but now I
want to record birds and they are much more difficult. The insects are
easy, all you do is crouch down in the grass & they're right there,
but birds are very high up, and there is a huge problem of ambient
traffic and wind noise.

I wonder if the cloth fabric of an umbrella would block out any of
this noise and cut down on wind.
