I've wondered if it's a function of freezing. If they freeze they
probably all choose fairly similar winter spots, so thaw together,
providing a synchronizing function.

But, down here there are certainly winters where they may never freeze.
If so, their breeding clock may not get synchronized.

There's a research project for some grad student.

Note even down here most biologists believe that they only do a short
season and don't even check for them outside of that. Which can become a
self fulfilling prediction as to season length.
