I bought the new handle. I still have my old handle unmodified.

Note I've seen some high capacity NIMH 9volt rechargables. I cannot say
if a really high capacity one would be safe or might overcharge the
handle battery. The standard capacity is 160-170mah, about the same as
the handle, I saw one recently that was 250mah.
