Any sharp transitions in the surface will produce turbulence. It's rounded to minimize turbulance. But I have seen people's designs where they just made it square ended and they seemed happy enough with the results. Don't forget to check clearance for your connectors and cables, they take room too and should not rub against things or be too tight so as to transmit handling noise to the mic.
