Primarily it's a matter of greatest distance from the sides to maximize
the wind protection, so center is ideal. But it's not all that critical.
How close it is to the front dome is usually a matter of match of length
of zep to mic. I've always been just a little concerned about the bands
changing the polar pattern, though I've heard no evidence of this.

Of course in my M/S setups with two mics to deal with there is some
compromise. The side mic ends up only about 1/2" or so from the top of
the zep. That results in a little more wind sensitivity requiring the
use of fur a little sooner than otherwise.

 way?

Yes, the Rycote modular system has lots of adjustments to fit a variety
of mics. They give directions as to where to set things for each model
mic on their list. I think it's really mostly a matter of getting the
mic into as small a zep as possible.

I prefer that the suspension that's holding the mic be back on the
housing and not near the grill. With a shotgun mic like the MKH-60 that
means a long length in front of the support.
