Sound cards have improved a lot in recent years.
So much so that 16 bit audio is almost never a worry on a new card.
So what is most important right now is the physical connections, the
box, and number of channels supported. If you want to record 4+
channels at 24/96 or higher then there is a lot of homework needed.
As far as Cooledit and Audition, the one thing you pay attention to is
audio "driver" support. Currently there is no Cooledit or Audition
support for ASIO drivers. They do support MME and so there usually is
not a problem. If this does not mean anything to you than likely
there is no issue at all. This means more to the music people playing
multiple tracks while at the same time recording new tracks.
