Cultural Sensitivity

I am not an expert on cultural sensitivity, but I'm pretty sure at 
least here in the USA the term jap when referring to Japanese 
people is racially charged and considered by many to be 
derogatory on par with the term nigger.  
Can we at least agree that racial slurs if we purposefully choose 
to use them in our lives should be kept to our private 
correspondences? And when we slip and unintentionally offend 
someone in this public forum, can we at least show some 
respect and say "Sorry, I didn't mean to offend anyone." 
That's all I will say on this.
