A couple of folks on the list have more experience with the NT-4's
than I. We just bought a bunch for students this fall. Its X-Y
pattern is less flexible than M-S (VP-88) but the image over ~135
degrees is quite nice. With caps so close, a stereo image of very
small areas can be rendered. Spec-wise and to my ears, it seems to
have less noise than the VP-88. Its pretty compact but
heavy--definitely requires a hefty shock mount and good wind
screening. We made ours from 3" PVC and #64 Rubber bands

'd guess if X-Y works for one's application(s), its competitive with
the VP-88, especially at the lower price. Probably worth the $250
above the Sony 957 if you want to record in quieter settngs.

The recent release of Audacity isn't quite as nice as PT free but it
is free. Rob D.
