I've posted a few clips of 17-year cicada sounds (songs, I guess,
since they apparently sing) I taped while on a short cicada roadtrip
(from Madison, WI to Bloomington, IN):

I was too late to eat any (which is best right when they emerge,
fried in butter, I hear). There are 3 different sub-species, each
with different sounds. All I know is that one sounds like a lawn-
sprinkler and others like aliens. And did you know that the cicadas
are actually moving around, digging tunnels and eating tree-roots for
17 years before they emerge, breed, and die?
As for the Mystery Sound, I received an email from a man in Romania
asking if I recognized a sound he recorded in the city (he sent a
video clip of what seemed like high-rise buildings). Maybe somebody
can identify the sound, also posted on the site above.
