Greetings,
I am rather new to this list, but I know enough about
the group to know that this is a great place to start
researching recording gear. I was talking with
someone today about Hi-MD and the recent discussions
here (and/or phonography.org) about its unforseen
limitations regarding uploading files. He mentioned a
Marantz (sp?) recorder which records directly to CD.
Is this something that people regularly use? If I
understand correctly, the recorder is more expensive
than consumer MD products, but less expensive than pro
MD products. I'm new to field/nature recording, so am
not quite ready to go HHb yet. I presently have a
pre-order in for the top Hi-MD model, but was
considering cancelling the order. Am I better off
spending a little more for the Marantz? Are the
electronics going to be better?
My recording interests are both nature recording for
its own sake and general field recording to collect
material for electroacoustic composition. I have an
RME multiface and quadmic preamp, 2 Rode NT-1A's, and
am considering 2 Telinga EM-23's. I would like to
have the flexibility of using The EM-23's in a
portable set up, but also the NT-1A's in a
semi-portable, higher quality XLR->preamp->stand-alone
converter->optical input to whatever medium (Hi-MD or
CD, if I understand the Marantz correctly). Any
thoughts, cautions, or advice? Any help would be
greatly appreciated from this obviously expert group.
Best,
Jeff
