I was hoping the new Sound Devices 744T recorder would do the trick, but
only two inputs will have preamps and phantom power, so I'd be stuck with
the preamp problem there as well. No obvious solution right now, I guess.

There have certainly been requests :)  I don't know of many other
options that get you pres, power, and A/D/A in a reasonably small
package.  You could piggy back 2 ULN2's together or go with some kind
of external battery powered pre (RME quad thingy, etc), but at that
point, the price starts going up.  The metric halo stuff is the closest
I've seen to an "all in one" with a certain level of quality.  Most
other computer interfaces don't have the options for powering.  Of
course, you could move away from computer recording, but then you
really are talking big bucks.
