Ants stridulate, Rich, rubbing they tiny legs against their abdomens.
Good recordings (made by laying a pair Sony ECM55Bs on top of an ant
mound covering the hole) can be found on Track 5 on the CD in my new
book, "Wild Soundscapes" or I can post the material as an MP3, if
you'd like. Also have video shot by National Geographic, who happened
to be filming a field trip I led at the time. Been recording them for
over a dozen years now and have about 45 species with different
signatures all. One doesn't need fancy gear and can record with a $24
lav from Radio Shack.
