OK folks. For those interested in some real surround history, the
engineer who mixed the first live surround recording done in 1971 for
the Warner Brothers album Paul Beaver and I did ("Gandharva") has
just fired up his old Ampex AG-300 (ca. 1968) and, using discrete
AIFF files for each of the four channels in each track using ProTools
at 48 kHz / 24 bit. moved the original Dolby A analogue tracks over
to the PC and authored DVD-A discs (for four channels of audio) using
Diskwelder Bronze, which is a pretty basic program. Thus, Bob Orban
has resurrected what has lain on the shelf for over 32 years, unheard
and otherwise lost to the technical ages. It ain't Farenheit 9/11
(which, BTW, is a must-see for any conscientious human), but it is
definitely the first of it's kind. (For more detail, see my email of
15 June).
Dan, maybe we can set some kind of playback up at your joint, or,
since Ray Dolby was involved in the album, maybe we can entice Eric
Benjamin, who works there, to set up an AES invite playback gathering.
